My will
can get me in trouble.
I usually set goals
based on desire.
My higher power wants
to give me what I need
But, I want what I want,
not what I need.
and there is the problem
and I’m left dazed and confused.
My will usually seeks pleasure, avoids pain,
and generally keeps me concerned with
self and not anyone else.
I think my higher wants me to be concerned for
other people first.
So, I need a program to help me align
my will with God’s will
But how do I do this?
Well, that is the topic tonight
God’s Will and My Will
Cristie, let’s start with you tonight…
Let’s start with Self Will
What do you think “self will” or “My Will” means?
When do you think self will is good for you?
When do you think self will is bad for you?
What do you think is a healthy “self will”?
When do you think when “self will” becomes unhealthy?
How do you think self will and desires relate?
The 11th steps tells us that
we are to pray only for God’s will.
We may have also heard the prayer “Thy Will, not My will”
What do you think Thy Will or “God’s will” means?
Some people say,
the program gives me what I need
Not what I want.
What are your thoughts on needs versus wants
and how they relate with happiness.
Have you ever sensed God’s Will in your life? Explain, how did you feel, what did you do?
How do you use the program to align your will with God’s will?
We have calls!

Socrates once said
"Life contains but two tragedies.
One is not to get your heart's desire;
the other is to get it"?
let’s talk about this
Have you ever accomplished a goal and it felt empty?
Have you ever attempted to accomplish a goal and failed and you felt resentful?
What happens to you when your will doesn’t match up with God’s will?
Let’s talk about some recovery tools that can help us comprehend God’s will for us.
The acceptance statement and the serenity prayer
Are you familiar with the Acceptance statement on page 417 of the big book?
Acceptance is the answer to ALL of my problems today. When I am disturbed, it is because I find some person, place, thing or situation- some fact of my life- unacceptable to me, and I can find no serenity until I accept that person, place, thing, or situation as being exactly the way it is supposed to be at this moment. Nothing, absolutely nothing, happens in God's world by mistake. Until I could accept my alcoholism, I could not stay sober; unless I accept my life completely on life's terms, I cannot be happy. I need to concentrate not so much on what needs to be changed in the world as on what needs to be changed in me and in my attitudes.
How does the acceptance statement help?
What about the serenity prayer?
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,
The courage to change the things I can,
And the wisdom to know the difference.
Does the serenity prayer help? How?
