When you’ve been through the trials and tribulations of active addiction, you may have a hard time moving on. Those caught up in substance abuse often make poor choices and hurt others in the process. Sometimes, the 12-step recovery process can bring up shameful memories and negative thoughts about those actions. This is why self-compassion is crucial for those in recovery.
When used as a recovery tool, self-compassion has shown to help people deal with the stresses of early recovery and better manage their emotions. It involves being mindful, but the practice also boosts self-esteem, reduces self-criticism, and allows the person to feel more comfortable in their own skin – qualities that are essential for lasting sobriety.
