Recovery Topic –  Alcoholism is a family disease
I opened the podcast with a question to the newcomer

Are you having difficulties with relationships within your own family?  If your response is yes you’re not alone.  This is because alcoholism is a family disease.

My drinking has affected other people.
Those closest to me I have damaged the most because they have been exposed to the disease of alcoholism the most.
Consequently, those closest to me are the sickest when it comes to their relationship with me.
They developed ways of thinking and behaving that allowed them to cope with my behavior.
Over time, these behaviors became toxic to them and affected the way they treat and react to other people.
This is how alcoholism is a family disease.

For example, my mother would never call herself alcoholic, but her drinking has affected me.
When I was a kid, I never felt listened to, never felt heard, never felt like I got enough attention.  This is probably because my mother was not present because of her drinking.
Therefore, this is why I crave attention, I need acceptance, and I am very sensitive to criticism.

So other peoples drinking effects the way I think, the way I behave.  And this continues to this day as well.  When I work with a new guy, I sometimes get to wrapped up into his sobriety.  If he is doing well, I feel good about myself.  Conversely, if my guy relapses, I tend to blame myself.  I wonder what I did wrong.  But this is grandiose thinking.  I need to be part of the solution not part of the problem.  I need to let those people I care about to have the dignity to deal with the consequences of their own behaviors.  Otherwise, they may never find their bottom and get help.  I might be the reason they don’t hit bottom and stay sick.  Simple but not easy.

Recovery Topic – Wreckage of the past
I opened the podcast with a question to the newcomer about the haunting past

steps 1-3 right with god
steps 4-9 right with neighbor
steps 10-12 maintenance steps

Step nine is the asset. Page 85 of the 12 and 12 where we get a glimpse of the answer to this problem.

It is with our behavior and example that we start to regain trust.

These positive attitudes and behaviors we demonstrate in the ninth step show our loved ones that we are changing for the better.  These loving actions are much more convincing than words.

This is how I regained trust.  By demonstrating that I am trustworthy.  By showing respect and dignity.

Greetings from Scotland. Don't change anything. The personal stuff is good, it helps us connect with you personally. You're maybe being a bit self-critical. Everything's fine, the show's really good. Keep doing whatever you're doing, it's working.

The PC Alano club made a site selection study to move our club.  More room for more hours and more parking. Also, our neighbors don;t like us so much. R Block, Edward Jones Investment, a Cleaners, etc.  Bunch of drunks hanging out all hours smoking. Tried to get the drunks to smoke out back but this is a continuous challenge like baby sitting the area.
Site selected is an abandoned strip mall.  Large space formally an auto parts store I think.
Significant investment required from club for redesign and reconstruction of the space.
Decided to stay put in present locations.Decided to stay in present location.

Recovery Topic – One day at a time

I opened the podcast with a question to the newcomer about tolerance and how difficult that is
When I first came into the program my whole life was centered on me and my actions and my desires...and I had no patience for someone who didn’t see the world like I did.

Page 67 of the big book has good advise on this subject of tolerance
This passage I could identify with in regards to my attitudes about someone that is clearly in the wrong and someone I have no patience for.  Here’s what the book says on page 67.

Though we did not like their symptoms and the way these disturbed us, they, like ourselves, were sick too. We asked God to help us show them the same tolerance, pity, and patience that we would cheerfully grant a sick friend. When a person offended we said to ourselves, "This is a sick man. How can I be helpful to him? God save me from being angry. Thy will be done."

Another person I had difficulty with is the person who I had hurt in the past. Encountering these people was so awkward.
Let’s turn to page Page 118 and see what advise is there

Yet you must not expect too much.

That is, just because you’re sober doesn’t mean all is forgiven

His ways of thinking and doing are the habits of years. Patience, tolerance, understanding and love are the watchwords. Show him these things in yourself and they will be reflected back to you from him. Live and let live is the rule. If you both show a willingness to remedy your own defects, there will be little need to criticize each other.

On the other side, we will have clips
