Tonight, our

Recovery Topic is

Excuses

Like I said at the top of the program

As alcoholics,

we spent a lifetime trying to escape, minimizing fault, and then feeling bad about ourselves.

Before the program, did you make excuses for your drinking?

Did it work?

What were the consequences?

Why did you feel the need to make excuses for drinking alcohol?

Was it to justify behavior?

Did you do it to minimize guilt?

To try to convince people that you were not so bad?

Did it work?

What were the consequences?

Why do we make excuses?

Did you make excuses why AA wouldn’t work?

How does/making excuses endanger you progrm?

Did you make excuses not to take a step?  Which one?

Did it work?

What were the consequences?

What tools do you use when confronted with the temptation to make an excuse?

What slogan?

What prayer?

What step?

How is Procrastination an excuse?

What are the consequences?

How is Lying an excuse?

What are the consequences?

We have calls.  on lap top

How does character defects contribute to making excuses?

selfish

self centered

egotistical

Is excuse making habitual?

How do we break this pattern of behavior?

What is the payoff of being honest?

What would you say to the newcomer about excuse making?

Serenity Prayer,

God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change,

The courage to change the things I can,

And the wisdom to know the difference.

What were your thoughts, experience of the Serenity Prayer?

Was it off putting, or was it comforting?

Did the word God bother you?

Early days, What did it mean to you ( and hosts), in the early days.

How did you begin to apply it to your sobriety/ recovery.

Did it help?

What the Prayer did for me in the early days ( and can still do today), is remind me of the

importance of acceptance, can bring comfort to me and it also began to develop a Faith in a power greater than myself, the idea that something outside of myself ( or within myself), could help me....restore me to Sanity.

When I pray, I consider the idea that I am not alone, and sometimes this is a very new concept for the new person.

It can also begin to grow an inner humility, an understanding that I am not and can not control everything or everyone in my life.....something that we all tried to do in our addiction!!!

God grant me the Serenity....What does this mean to you?

To accept the things I can not change, how do we do this, why do we need to do this?

Courage to change the things I can.. where can you put the action in ?

Wisdom to know the difference....How does the Program help you to do this?

When I pray, I feel that I am not alone, is this important?, Why is it important for the new guy, or the long timer.

Just think the next time you're in a meeting and you're all saying the Serenity Prayer, just take a moment to consider how many of us all over the world are doing the same thing!! Isn't that wild? Something that brings me such joy and a sense of togetherness and Peace🌟

The Big Book

The 12 and 12

24 Hours a Day

The Long form of Tradition 4 is:

With respect to its own affairs, each A.A. group should be responsible to no other authority than its own conscience. But when its plans concern the welfare of neighboring groups also, those groups ought to be consulted. And no group, regional committee, or individual should ever take any action that might greatly affect A.A. as a whole without conferring with the trustees of the General Service Board. On such issues our common welfare is paramount.

What is Autonomy?

What is a group conscience?

is it just a meeting or something more?

What is an example of a decision that may affect the group but not others?

How to handle money

Name of group

When and where to meet

Officers and how assigned

What is an example of an action that would affect an other group?

Naming the group the same as another

How do you consult another group?  Have you ever seen this?

When PC Alano club was forming

How does Tradition 4 effect your own personal sobriety?

How does it practically affect your own home group right now?

What decisions have you group made that may be outside of the Traditions as a whole but was allowed under this tradition?

What are the consequences of allowing groups to break traditions?

They fail

What are the consequences of trying to enforce traditions?

It doesn’t work

scandal

If groups are allowed to make mistakes, break tradition, how is AA still around?

“each group can manage its affairs exactly as it pleases, except when AA as a whole is threatened”.  Is this dangerous and/or foolish?  Why?

Why would there be danger in labeling your group “Communist” or “Catholic” or “Protestant” if that’s what the people in the group believe and share?

Have you ever been part of an AA group that exercised its right to be wrong?  And what did that look like?

How does Tradition 4 affect the new guy?

What are thoughts on groups like Celebrate Recovery??
